The game of football in secondary schools and students’ enrolment in Kakuuto county, Kyotera district

Abstract

Football, world over has been viewed as a very interesting game by both the aged and the young people, both males and females. The study generally sought to find out how the game of football in secondary schools influence on students’ enrolment in Kakuuto county of Kyotera district. Specifically, the study sought to find out how the game of football is administered, its trend, and its influence on students’ enrolment in secondary schools of Kakuuto County. The researcher used a cross-sectional survey research design to study the attitudes/behaviors and opinions of people while using both qualitative and quantitative data collection and analysis techniques. Only 45.5 percent of the respondents said that the school has enough facilities that enable students play football, 53.2 percent of the respondents disagree on whether there is a system for rewarding students who are playing football for the school. 91.6 percent of the respondents reported to have seen more students participating in the game of football over time. Relating to trends, 63.7 percent reported that their schools have improved in performance in the game of football over the last 5 years and 67.9 percent agreed that their schools have over time improved in the way they participate in external football competitions with other schools. Only 28.7 percent agreed that the game of football had an influence on them while selecting the school. Overall, 51.1 percent agreed that the game of football has had a great impact on school enrolment. The study findings have clearly shown that the development of the game of football can concurrently happen with the development of the entire education sector through improving the enrolment of students. The recommendations include; the need for schools to improve management in terms of planning, finance, human resources, in line with improving the game of football, there is need for investing more in the game of football. Improve sports facilities for the game of football and provide a friendly environment for students to participate meaning fully. There should be engagements with schools aimed at developing grassroots football. Schools in partnership with the football federation can employ qualified or even trainee coaches or teachers with football coaching skills that can supervise the game, teach the theories of the sport and identify and develop talents.
