Teachers’ participation in curriculum implementation and the teaching methods adopted in government aided primary schools in Arua municipality

Abstract

This study sought to investigate the effects of Teachers‟ Participation in Curriculum implementation on teaching Methods in Government Aided Primary Schools in Arua Municipality by assessing the extent of teachers‟ participation, examining the extent of implementation of teaching methods and determining the relationship between teachers‟ Participation in curriculum implementation and teaching methods., data was collected through questionnaires and interview guide from a sample of 140 respondents: head teachers and deputies, school management committee members, P.7 pupils, local authority staff and DEO‟s Office. Descriptive statistics involving mean and standard deviation; inferential statistics involving Pearson‟s Correlation and Regression Analysis. Were used for data analysis. The results indicated that teachers of Government Aided Primary Schools in Arua Municipality participation in curriculum implementation was moderate (Overall mean=3.32), the teachers used various teaching methods: co-operative learning (59.8%) group discussion (61.6%), role Playing( 26.2%) which was the least employed and demonstration(64.9%).The results also indicated that, curriculum implementation had a strong positive correlation with implementation of teaching methods (r = 0.795 ; P- value .000 < 0.01).The study concluded that, the teachers of Government Aided Primary Schools in Arua Municipality participation in curriculum implementation was moderate, however, they used various teaching methods and there was a positive and significant correlation between curriculum development and implementation of teaching methods. this study recommends that, teachers should be evolved and facilitated right from the beginning at every stage of curriculum implementation, school management in conjunction with the Ministry of Education and sports should organize, workshops, seminars and refresher courses for teachers and provide adequate teaching and learning aids and teachers should work collaboratively and effectively with curriculum implementation colleagues (teachers) and specialists to arrange and compose materials, textbooks, and contents.
