Staff training and performance of employees in Uganda. A case of Civil Aviation Authority (CAA)
Abstract
The study examines the contribution of staff training on employee performance in Uganda.
The dimensions of the independent variable include; Job rotation, Coaching and Mentoring
whereas the dimensions of the dependent variable are; productivity, employee output,
performance appraisals.
The objectives of the study of the study are;
I. To investigate how job rotation contributes to employee performance in Civil Aviation
Authority
II. To find out the extent to which coaching improves employee performance Civil
Aviation Authority.
III. To examine the effect of mentoring on employee performance in Civil Aviation
Authority
The study employed a case study research design which and also adopted a quantitative approach
for the study. The sample size was determined by the Krejcie and Moegan (1970) table which
obtained a sample size of 48 respondents and closed ended questionnaires were used to collect
data for the study.
The study findings revealed that job rotation brings employees new skills, and reduces boredom
at their work place, coaching improved their work, the employees increased their effectiveness,
gained new skills due to coaching they received from their superiors and mentoring helped
employee for the supervisor always checked on their work, improved work and brought in
efficiency and effectiveness at their work.
The study concludes that there is a positive relationship between staff training and the employee
performance given that a majority of the respondents agreed that job rotation practices were not
carried out; job coaching improves work performance; mentoring inspired employees to be
efficient and efficient though such practices were carried out
It can be recommended that the CAA should encourage job rotation, coaching and mentoring
relationship to be enhanced and there should be adequate training in the area of employees’
specialization through seminars and conferences to update employees of new skills that will help
the workers improve efficiency and effectiveness at their work places.
