The effect of training methods on employee performance in an organization
Abstract
The study was conducted at Nkozi Hospital in Mpigi District and it focused on the effect of
training methods and employee performance. The study was boosted by the phenomenon
that despite the prevalence of various employee training methods, a number of organizations
do not apply training to their employees and yet it is one of the key components of
performance.
In this study, two approaches; qualitative and quantitative research methods were used to
collect data. The quantitative approach focused on analyzing the effect of training methods on
employee performance while qualitative approach was used to analyze non- numerical data
which included statements of respondents, perceptions, ideas, views and attitudes towards
training methods and employee performance in Nkozi Hospital. During the research both
primary and secondary data sources were used, where the primary data was collected using a
questionnaire and open ended questions. Secondary data was also accessed by reading
reports, journals, and text books in relation to training methods.
As pertains objective one which is to establish a relationship between on- the- job training
and employee performance, it was revealed that there is a positive relationship between on the job training whereby the majority of the respondents expressed that on the job training
emphasizes learning by practice whereby employees do hands on activities and they gain
experience and this helps to improve quality and productivity which later becomes cost
effective in order to produce better end results. Trainees perform specific tasks through
instructions given to them by the trainer though few respondents disagreed with the statement
that commitment and competition are promoted among employees.
Looking at the second objective which is to evaluate the influence of job rotation on
employee performance, it was disclosed that job rotation provides employees with
opportunities hence gaining a variety of skills for a job which promotes flexibility and
motivation among employees and problems are easily solved as soon as possible however
there were some respondents who disagreed that job rotation does not reduce boredom but
only said it increases the workload.
Lastly, the third objective is to assess the effect of off job training on employee performance
where it was discovered that employees are able to pay more attention to the material being
taught and minimize on the destructions at the workplace and this helps them to improve on
their communication and interpersonal skills that increases efficiency and competency of the
organization through exploring their core competences though it may be costly to some
organizations to train their employees using off the job training.
The researcher recommends Nkozi Hospital to involve its employees in training and should
choose the training method carefully; they should select a method that brings out better
results at the end of the training period. Nkozi Hospital should sensitize its employees about
the effect of training on employees when they engage in training, Nkozi Hospital always hire
people especially experts outside to train its employees and this will help to improve on its
performance because they are exposed and have better skills as compared to the trainers
within the organization and lastly there are important areas that need further research.
