Factors influencing the persistence of unemployment among the youths of Kampala central division
Abstract
The main objective of this study was to analyze the factors influencing the persistence of
unemployment among the youths of Kampala central division. To attain this objective the study
involved 169 respondents who were selected randomly from areas of Katanga, Kiwunya, Kikoni,
and Kisenyi. It focused mainly on three specific objectives i.e. establishing the major factors
causing unemployment among the youth of Kampala Division, establishing the level of
unemployment among youth in Kampala Central Division and discussing the major factors
causing persistence levels of unemployment among the youth in Kampala Central Division.
This research paper therefore contains all the details of how the research was conducted and how
the research findings on the topic “Factors Influencing the Persistence of Unemployment among
the Youths of Kampala Central Division” was presented and disseminated. It contains the
background, purpose and objectives of the study in chapter one and among the objectives were, to
establish the major factors causing unemployment among the youth of Kampala Division, to
establish the level of unemployment among youth of Kampala Central Division and to discuss the
major factors causing persistence levels of unemployment among the youth in Kampala Central
Division. It also provides the review of the literature about unemployment in Uganda in chapter
two, while the research methods employed include use of questionnaires, conducting interviews
and observation in conducting the research in chapter three. Chapter four focuses on the
presentation, analysis and interpretation of the research findings. This actually reported that about
50-75% of the youth in Kampala central don’t have jobs. This statistics with its validity was
reported by 83.3% of the respondents whereas chapter five contains the summary, conclusion
and recommendation on findings.
The study offers recommendations that may help the government and other organizations
establish the best policies and solutions. Among the policies and solutions cited were; the
government concentrating on constructing industries to create jobs for the youths especially those
leaving university. Government extending credit to young people especially those with
investment and entrepreneurship ideas, supporting infant industries through subsidization and
reduction in taxes, more investment in agriculture should be encouraged to reduce rural urban
migration, embracing justice and fight corruption and embezzlement of government funds
solution to youth unemployment in the country.

This study is also a base for further studies on the related subject that enhances job creation and
efficient utilization of resources to increase youth absorption into the job market. Further research
that may be conducted using the results of this research include the impact of corruption and
embezzlement of government funds on job creation and the impact of population growth on
unemployment
