Web-based canteen management system : Case Study: Uganda Martyrs University Masaka Campus
Abstract
The word "canteen" refers to a place where food and beverages are provided, typically in an
institutional setting. The main goal of a canteen management system is to streamline operations
and enhance the dining experience for users.
This project focuses on developing a Web-Based Canteen Management System for higher
institutions of learning using Uganda Martyrs University Masaka Campus as the case study.
The study examines the challenges faced by canteen management, staff, and customers during
the ordering and dining process. It explores how the canteen can leverage Information
Technology to efficiently manage its operations and records. The study provides solutions for
how best institutions of higher learning can optimize their canteen management processes.
Many canteen management systems have struggled to meet users’ expectations. Efficiency and
user satisfaction are significant concerns, prompting extensive research in recent years. In
Uganda, developing a robust and scalable canteen management system has been a challenge.
Traditional manual systems are plagued with issues such as long queues, order
mismanagement, and payment inefficiencies.
This system was developed using HTML and PHP as the programming languages and MySQL
as the database management system. The development process involved designing the system
architecture, user interfaces, and database structure.
At the end of the project, a Web-Based Canteen Management System for Uganda Martyrs
University Masaka Campus, which served as the case study, was successfully developed
