Computer- based personnel management system
Abstract
Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST) is a public university located in
Mbarara district. The university has many institutes and faculties with different human resource
working in these facilities. MUST uses a traditional manual system to manage personnel business
process like records management, overtime processing and leave processing. The manual records
management system is not efficient and effective for personnel managers to access, retrieve and
update employee information. The Human Resource department is also faced with the challenge of
computational errors arising from the manual calculation of overtime hours. This leads to some
instances that the university loses money by paying some staff more than they should be paid and in
other instances the staff getting less than what they should be paid.
In order to handle the personnel business processes better, a software tool was developed and
implemented. The data collection methods used, were interview and questionnaires. An evolutionary
prototyping method was used for system development. Bottom-up approach was used for system
design and actual realization of the Computer Based Personnel Management System was done using
PHP, HTML, CSS and MySQL for the database.
It is anticipated that the computer based management system will make management of
personnel information efficient and effective.
