The role of the community driven development programme on poverty reduction among rural households in Harugale Sub-County of Bundibugyo
Abstract
The study aimed specifically to find out the community projects initiated within the CDDP framework, to establish the poverty reduction indicators among beneficiary households of the CDDP and to explain the poverty reduction indicators of CDD Programme in Bundibugyo in light of the sustainable strategies of rural households. The study was qualitative with a case study on households of Harugale Sub-county. The interviews, questionnaires and secondary data sources were methods employed for collecting data for the study and a total sample of size of fifty (50) respondents were selected from the CDDP stakeholder categories: Beneficiary households, local government officials, local leaders and beneficiaries.
The findings show that projects geared towards rural financial schemes, promotion of farming activities and animal rearing were implemented, substantive poverty reduction indicators centred on income generating activities, and household savings, income sources were identified. The participatory strategy dominated the sustainability strategies. Therefore, community driven development programme is a vital approach in reducing poverty and its intervention promoted empowered households. The community driven development with a participatory and inclusive development strategy still remains relevant in the address of rural household poverty. The researcher recommends that there is need for integral development approaches, the need to assess and revitalise the poverty reduction policies and strategies and direct beneficiary resource access to reduce rural household poverty.
