The effects of motivation on the performance of rural health workers in Gulu district
Abstract
This study was carried out to investigate the effect of motivation on the performance of health
workers in St. Mary`s Hospital Lacor is commonly known as Lacor Hospital. Lacor Hospital is
located in Opia Village, Bardege sub-count, Gulu Municipality, Gulu District, Acholi Sub region, Northern Uganda.
The study population was the health workers of St. Mary`s Hospital Lacor. The objectives of the
study were: to investigate the effect of promotion on the performance of health workers in the
hospital, to find out the effect of pay on the performance of the health workers and also to find
out the effect of a conducive work environment on the performance of the health workers in the
Hospital.
Literature was reviewed to supplement and support the research findings and mainly articles,
academic journals, text books, pamphlets, and internet were used as major sources of literature.
This literature greatly contributed to the study and findings of the study were compared with the
literature to see whether they concur or not.
Questionnaires were used as means of data collection and 20 questionnaires were distributed to
the health workers. The data collected was then analyzed properly to produce the information.
Tables were used in the presentation of data collected from the field. The study findings
indicated that the health workers in St. Mary`s Hospital Lacor were positively and negatively
affected by promotion, pay, and a conducive work environment. The positive effect included:
improved employee performance, increased job satisfaction, increased productivity, increased
morale for work, increased attendance and increased customer care where as the positive effect
included; decline in performance, job dissatisfaction, decreased morale for work, late coming
and absenteeism.
