    Abstract
Admission of students into any institution of learning such as Ankole Western University is a core activity. Every academic institution needs students to exist and survive. Thus an admission system of a University needs to be efficient and effective in order to avoid unnecessary delays associated with inefficiencies. Of concern is that, this paper confirms and quantify that 78% of admissions were performed on filling paper forms. Such admissions were characterized by multiple admissions, being costly, inconsistency, inaccuracy, and difficulties in following admission procedures and such admission system was considered unfair and not transparent. To mitigate these challenges, a web-based solution named Ankole Western University-Admission Management System (AWU-ADMS) has been designed and developed to resolve the identified admission challenges. The proposed AWU-ADMS was designed to be a web-based solution and is intended to reduce admission costs by reducing turnaround time for entire admission processes, encourage the use of paperless admission; control forgery over entry qualifications (certificates) during the admission process and reach many geographically scattered applicants. The data was mainly collected through interviews, questionnaires and document reviews followed by a design in Unified Modelling Language (UML) to meet the admission system requirements. The system was developed using PHP, HTML, JavaScript and MySQL. The system was tested numerous times with real data by the department of Academic Registrar, Ankole Western University.
