Assessing the impact of microfinance services on the livelihood of the rural people: case study Kayabwe parish, Nkozi sub-county
Agaba, Hellen
The main objective of the study was to assess the impact of microfinance services on the
livelihoods of the rural people in Kayabwe Parish in Nkozi Sub-County. The study
specifically assessed the impact of credit and savings on the livelihoods of the rural
people and challenges rural people face in accessing MFI services.
The study further explored other studies done by scholarly persons in relation people’s
perceptions and attitudes towards borrowing and using credit, reasons why people save
and challenges faced by rural people in accessing MFI services.
The study adopted a research design which included field survey and the data was
collected using three research instruments that is, questionnaires, interviews and
observation. Respondents were drawn from the clientele base of various MFIs in Mpigi
and representatives from MFIs. A sample of 92 was selected using simple random
sampling technique. A pre-tested questionnaire was used to gather information about the
study variables.
Findings revealed that MFIs services improve on the livelihood of rural people amidst
other several poverty reduction measures. Majority of the borrowers in this community
get small loans from MFIs as opposed to commercial banks that require conventional
collateral security which most rural people lack. Social support in form of group
solidarity is among the collateral security low income earners in Kayabwe present to
MFIs in order to get a loan. Findings also affirmed that demand for voluntary savings
among the rural people is higher than compulsory savings.
Based on the findings it is recommended that MFIs should make their credit access
methodologies simple, reduce on the interest rates, increase grace period for loan
repayment, make people’s savings easily accessible and establish their branches in rural
areas to curb the problem of long distances by the clients.

The impact of savings mobilization on household income in the rural areas: case study VSLA in Panyangara sub-county in Kotido district
Amollo, Rose Mary Ocheng
The majority of the world’s poor live in rural areas with little access to financial institutions.
Setting up village savings and loan associations has become an increasingly wide spread
intervention aimed at improving local financial intermediation. Using a cluster randomized trial
we investigate the impact of VSLA in Panyangara sub-county, we find evidence of positive and
significant intention to treat effect on several outcomes, including the number of meals per day,
household expenditure as measured by the USAID poverty assessment tool, and the number of
rooms in the dwelling.
The study employed survey research design particularly descriptive survey. The study was
conducted in one VSLA group of panyangara sub county, Kotido district with a sample size of
32 members. Questionnaire was the main instrument of data collection in addition to interview
guide and document review. The data was analyzed using descriptive statistics. The results of the
study was presented in frequency tables and percentages. The data generated from open-ended
items was analyzed by comparing and combining the responses from interview guide and
questionnaire. Content analysis was also applied for the interview guide.
The major finding of the study was the impact of savings mobilization is linked to an increase in
savings and credit obtained through VSLAs which has increased agricultural investment and
income from small business. Other findings include; the monthly propensity to consume out of
the family income basically reduces after joining the self-help groups because members have to
save compulsorily, the rate of school dropout is significantly lower in the families of group
members than families who do not belong to self-help groups people who accumulate large sums
of money react to interest rates than people who accumulate small sums of money. Deriving
from evidence and conclusion of the study, the following recommendations followed; encourage
the development of VSLA, embark on community sensitization to enhance savings mobilization,
integration of agricultural activities and linkage of VSLA to formal financial institutions.

credit administration on loan performance in Burunga Microfinance, to establish the effect of
credit monitoring and loan performance in Burunga Microfinance.
The study employed a case study design and qualitative and quantitative approaches were used.
This study was conducted among the employees of Burunga Microfinance in Kiruhura District, a
simple random and stratified sampling techniques were used. Data was analyzed using SPSS
version 21 and it was presented in form of tables, charts and it was described to give the
necessary meaning of the figures there in.
The findings revealed that credit appraisal, credit administration and credit monitoring all affect
loan performance if micro financial institution.
The researcher recommended that, before extending a loan to borrowers through loan appraisal
should be carried out especially to new clients, credit administration department should be more
vigilant and come up with control measures related to lending risks, financial institutions should
ensure that after disbursing loans they should carry out the necessary monitoring so as to find out
how the loans given out are being used by borrowers.

An assessment of the effect of village savings and loan associations on poverty reduction; case study: Aluru parish, Moyo District, Uganda

An assessment of the effect of village savings and loan associations on poverty reduction; case study: Aluru parish, Moyo District, Uganda
Tukube, Charles Bukisuk
Formal microfinance institutions have been regarded an important tool in the fight against
poverty in developing countries. Following this, Village Savings and Loan Associations
(VSLAs) have emerged as one of the most popular informal mechanisms for mobilizing
saving and extending credit to the poor in developing countries. Thus, this study aimed to
assess the effects of VSLA on poverty reduction, taking a case study of Aluru Parish, Moyo
District, Uganda. Using a mixed qualitative and quantitative research methodology, the
study tried to focus on examining the effects of VSLAs contribution to economic and social
wellbeing of households, and decision making, and participation in community activities.
The study used 254 samples (127 VSLA participants, and 127 non-participants) and
collected data using questionnaire and focus group discussion.
The study used propensity score matching (PSM) to estimate the effect of participation in
VSLA on average monthly household income, and the result indicated the average effect of
participation in VSLA on average monthly household income of participant women is
positive and significant at 5% significant level, ranging from 21,416.55 UGX/month (nearest
neighbor matching) to 17871.33 UGX/month (Kernel matching), on average. Besides,
comparison between participants and non-participants using hypothesis testing shows that
participation in VSLA has a significant positive association with improvements in household
diet, health, children’s education, and involvement in household decisions. However,
although hypothesized, no significant association is found in relation to participation in
community activities. Findings from the focus group discussions are also consistent with the
results from the PSM and hypothesis testing. Following the findings, the study recommends
government and nongovernmental organizations to provide regular, timely and need based
capacity building trainings for VSLA participants; Link VSLA participants with formal
microfinance institutions; conduct regular monitoring and follow ups by either the District or
concerned government body; different concerned stakeholders in the District including
government, nongovernmental organizations, microfinance institutions and others need to
work in coordinated manner to solve the recurrent challenges of VSLA participants in Moyo;
and finally government and/or nongovernmental organizations need to take best practices
and lessons from existing VSLAs and expand the VSLA initiative to address more
impoverished households in the District.
